Hi, I think that once you get into healthCARE you will change your mind on toileting. If you work with a patient who needs help, I would think, I would hope, you would put your issues aside and assist pt for whatever they need, including and especially toileting! You wouldn't want a pt to sit in their business because aside from it being cruel, could increase rashes and sores which could result in infection, pain, etc. Yes it is a dirty job sometimes but it's not impossible. You wouldn't be dealing with just toileting. You might deal with vomit, blood, wounds, tubes, pts who can't swallow and are continuously spitting up or drooling or require chest PT and have to check the sputum color to report - the list of body fluids is endless not to mention communicable diseases but that is what gloves, sani-wipes/chlorox, soap and water is for. As far as being male and not being sure how you will be viewed... my dear you would be viewed as a clinician, a healthcare provider, a professional, a member of the hospital/facility/clinic team, a licensed PTA or COTA. And even if you stick with strictly oupt, in which case you'd missing out on other experiences, you would still likely have to deal with toileting either as PTA or OTA during clinical rotations which are several months total for most programs. Based on your question, and preferences which you are certainly very welcome and entitled to express of course, I would say, respectfully, this might not be the career for you. Perhaps you may want to look into athletic training program, physical education, nutrition, exercise science to manage a fitness center or consider more administration side of the healthcare instead vs direct pt care?
