Physical Therapy Assistant Forum - Being a PTA with condromalacia patella?: I have been working the past few months ...
I have been working the past few months to get into a PTA program. I handed in my application a few weeks ago, and will find out in april if I made it in. My only concern now, is if I do get in, will I be able to handle being a PTA if my knees continue to have issues?
For the past few weeks I've been experiencing some pain, which I just saw an orthopedic dr for and he determined I have condromalacia patella (where the cartilage under my kneecap is rough, therefore anything having to do with bending my knees is slightly painful and doing too much can irritate it). Although I believe I only have a very slight case of it (the lowest level most likely), the doctor said I will have it forever and will just have to adjust my way of life to avoid irritating it. I'm still worried about putting effort into getting in to school, getting in, completing the program, and then finding out it wont be doable as a job in the future for me. Any advice please? Is there a lot of knee bending, kneeling, or squatting?
When I observed at a PT place, they didn't seem to do much squatting/bending of the knee but then again their patients were either standing to do exercises, or were doing them sitting/laying down on padded tables so the Physical Therapist was always standing with them.
I'm just really afraid to put so much into this and be unable to work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thinking of starting a PTA program in NE Indiana. I want to make sure the jobs are out there though. What can I expect directly out of school in terms of job outlook (will I find a job entry level?!). Also if I do find work, what can I expect for pay in this area? Thank you so much!

Hi everyone! I love reading everyone's comments and seeing the different discussion topics. I am about to start my observation hours for the PTA program at Pensacola State College. I'm just curious if anyone has been through this program in the last few years?
How is the waiting period? What is the program like? There are many forums and discussion about their nursing programs but none on their PTA and OTA programs.
Thanks in advance!!

Ok... I love reading all the comments. I am wanting to be A PTA , was searching about it and came across this site. I am curious what is " SNF" when others have talked about wrking in this type of setting?
From my fellow therapist friends I have heard pro & con about home health . It appears there is a much higher demand for PT's for HHC in WA than PTA's & for a PTA it is usually PD or OC. I need a full time permanent position. Ideally I would like a SNF with an assisted living . I would definitely be an ideal PTA for this kind of facility. As for outpt this really is not interesting & really boring-I did do some outpt in my 23 years of employment. As for brushing up on exercises, no problems, I did a lot of that with my variety of inpt folks. Personally, rehab managers are wanting younger folks who get less pay. Unfortunately, my experience & age (just turned 57) work against me. I already now I would not get paid what I did at my former job. I am in good health, too. As for schooling for future PT, nope, not when they require one to be a DPT not mention the monies involved. Thanks for your input.
Physical Therapy Assistant Forum - PTA or Radiology Tech field more in demand?: [QUOTE who="taurus20red in Atlanta, Geor...
Please do NOT I REPEAT DO NOT waste your time going to radiology school. The field is already saturated enough and its only getting worse. You will not find a fulltime job after you graduate. The radiology schools and the ARRT knows this but their just out to make money. They don't care about your job security. Ive been a rad tech for 17 yrs and Im back to making what I was being paid SEVEN YRS AGO. I'm going to PTA school because theres way more jobs in that field. I suggest you do the same. Good luck
What does PTA stand for? I am 28 and have been working on the administrative field for about 10 years. I have been researching and visiting colleges to find out which program to enter because I want to get into the health care field. I'm looking at either medical billing and coding or rad tech. I'm having a hard time deciding.

Physical Therapy Assistant Forum - pta rant: I worked full time right out of high sch...
I worked full time right out of high school attended community college for years with no real direction thanks to my advisors telling me physical therapy isnt for me.
I saved up money in my early twenties and thought working $h!tty jobs is working now but i have to have something more stable.
So i went with a field i wanted to go into when i was 18, albeit pta not pt. It was a big shocker how demanding this program was. The hardest thing i've ever done in my life. I passed everything graduated, clinicals, boards. I was proud of myself for supporting myself while going through hell.
Late october i see i passed my boards, its over....finally. Lets start the next chapter of my life with a good paying stable job....i start applying....and applying...and calling.....and talking to recruiters.....nothing. its almost march, 50 applications later still no job. The very few that contacted me said i had not enough experience. The interview i had also wasn't interested in my experience or lack there of. Now at 26 years of age and seeing my classmates getting jobs and buying cars i can't help but feel insane.
School boards clinicals.....the stress of finding a job in and around scranton pennsylvania the stress is far worse.
Rant over.

I just read all this chatter then i go on and look for PTA jobs and there are a bunch of them. Then i talk to experts in the field and they don't know WHAT any of you are talking about. Why are people so weird on the internet?? Sounds like a bunch of BS from a bunch of gossip queens. Most articles show a 40 percent growth in the industry and have PTA right up there with PT's. When i look for PTA jobs on job websites i find plenty with full time work. Is this just an I hate Obama thread or what??

Physical Therapy Assistant Forum - Criminal record and PTA career: I want to become a PTA but back in 2007 ...
I want to become a PTA but back in 2007 i pleaded guilty to OUI/DUI. Unfortunately it was not my first one because i had got one back in college. Both were misdemeaner charges. I have been talking to licensing boards and so far i've got mixed signals. Some states say it has to have been 10 years since the final incident. Others say it's case by case before the board.
The more immediate concern for me is borrowing money to get into school and then not being able to do the clinical part of the program. I'm also worried that it might be hard to get hired because jobs may view it as bad as a felony. I understand that these charges show that i was capable of bad judgement. The first one i was just young and stupid. The second one i thought i was legal to drive. There isn't a third one because i refuse to drive if i have had ANYTHING to drink PERIOD.
I'm wondering if anyone on here has enough knowledge in this area to tell me if it's worth going for this. I really can't afford to take out loans if i can't pay them back but doing anything else other than becoming a PTA will be a disappointment to me. By the time i sit for the license test it will be over 10 years, but i'm more concerned about clinical's and judgement from potential employers. I'm sure many of you reading this probably have somewhat of an idea how hard this will make it for me if not impossible. Would like to hear from you guys.

Physical Therapy Assistant Forum - Struggling in PTA school: Posts like this are a bit disheartening....
Posts like this are a bit disheartening. I'm having trouble getting people to talk to me about getting into the program because i have some misdemeaners 8 years ago. Then i come here and there is someone complaining about the coursework. In 2 minutes after reading this i searched kinesiology into youtube and tons of video's come up. Then i google it and tons of books and info come up for it. Before i even get into the program i will have reviewed all this stuff since i know kinesiology is one of the courses students find very difficult. I think if you want to do something you can do it. If you don't really want it and are just in it for the money then you come on a forum like this and complain you can't understand it. No ability to get help from the teachers or a tutor? That seems a bit harsh, but there are other ways to figure it out. If i can find all this stuff in 2 minutes i'm sure you can do this.

Physical Therapy Assistant Forum - First Day at Your First PTA Job: My first day I had a list of 16 patients...
My first day I had a list of 16 patients to see, didn't really get told anything about them or who was were, didn't know what hall they were on and almost nobody was in their room. Lots of short treatments and I would spend 30 minutes between people looking for a pt. I was like 56% productive or something. Drove 75 mins there and 75 mins there so I was gone like almost 16 hours lol
So ya you'll basically get thrown into it. I've been doing this almost 2 years and I still absolutely hate going into a place cold and not knowing a thing. Just did it to a 175 bed facility 2 days ago. My biggest piece of advice is to go in early presuming you might be very unproductive learning the place etc, and allow yourself 30-60 before you start/clock in to review charts/evals/progress notes/daily notes and maybe write down on your schedule or a seperate paper highlights of each person. Maybe a Dx, precautions and maybe how far they walk, how they transfer and what people have been doing with them. Some people are just confident enough or whatever to just go grab people they don't know anything about but not me. I like to know that if when I get them out of bed they are going to either fall on the floor or walk 500' to the therapy room lol

I'd say PTA for sure. PTA is becoming kind of saturated in a lots of places I think, but if you're willing to move there is still lots of work available.
Rad Tech sucks. My GF was in a program and a few months after they got in they told the students "...ya....only 8 people in the last 3 graduating classes have got a job..."
A fellow PTA student had a nephew who went into Rad and he had to move hours away to find a part time job and it was at night. From what i've heard there are almost no Rad jobs out there and new grads almost always have to take part time night jobs, basically the stuff nobody else wants to do. I think the average Rad salary is higher, but it will probably take you forever to be able to make that money. You can make as much as you want to as a PTA in a good market as long as you are willing to work.

Physical Therapy Assistant Forum - Prerequisites & Financial Aid Questions?: hi everyone. I finally decided to go bac...
hi everyone. I finally decided to go back to school this year and get an A.S. degree in Physical Therapy Assistant at a community college. but first i have to take these 3 prerequisites; human anatomy & physiology (4 semester units, including a lab) Math - intermediate algebra or higher (3 units) and English composition or equivalent (3 semester units) before i can do that. this will be my first time going to college and i have no idea where to start or what to do. when is the best time to register? what is the difference between units and semester units? how long will it take me to finish these classes? can it be done within a year? the reason why I'm asking is because i need to have these prerequisites ready before March 2016, which will be the deadline for PTA Program Fall 2016 application. i already applied for financial aid and was eligible for pell grant and loan. now i was wondering if i could use financial aid to pay for those courses? thank you in advance! :)
